Kuala Lumpur has retained its 50th position in Resonance Consultancy's 2026 World's Best Cities report, holding its own in a list that features 100 major metropolitan areas.

The annual ranking, produced in partnership with global research firm Ipsos, scores cities through a proprietary Place Power™ Score built on 46 metrics across 30 categories, combined with perception surveys from more than 21,000 respondents in 31 countries. Cities are evaluation across three pillars: Livability, Lovability, and Prosperity.

KL's headline number this year is its top-five global ranking for Labor Force Participation, which measures what share of the working-age population is actively employed or seeking work. Simply put: KL's workforce is engaged and active. The city also landed in the global top 20 for Standard of Living, which weighs economic well-being against local cost of living.

Then there's the skyline. Merdeka 118 — the world's second-tallest building — is set to open its observation deck later this year. Kuala Lumpur's luxury hotel game is also leveling up, with names such as Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur and Conrad Kuala Lumpur boosting the city's luxury hospitality market.

On the streets, the entertainment and retail ecosystem is also thriving. Bukit Bintang City Centre (BBCC) has been filling out around LaLaport and the Zepp concert hall, tightening the circuit between KLCC Park's expansive 50 acres and the Petaling Street night markets. The Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) financial district, anchored by a 10-acre rooftop city park and The Exchange TRX mall, has emerged as a defining pulsepoint in the city.

Urban infrastructure is also showing results. The billion-dollar River of Life program continues its push to rehabilitate the Gombak and Klang rivers, delivering new promenades, cleaner waterways, and neighborhood improvements. Rail extensions into KL Sentral and ongoing upgrades at KLIA, including biometric systems, are also smoothing the arrival experience for travelers.

The Asia-Pacific region is having its global urban moment. According to the World Travel and Tourism Council, seven of the top 10 cities with the "highest growth potential for international visitor spending through 2032" are in the region. It's a rising tide that KL is well-positioned to ride.
